The Historic Preservation Division operates statewide in cooperation with federal, state, and local government agencies, Native American Tribes, and the general public to preserve and protect the state's cultural properties through a variety of programs including the state and national register, income tax credits for the preservation of cultural properties, archaeological permits, Site Watch, compliance review, and the administration of grants.
Why does the job exist? The State Archaeologist concurs with the issuance of archaeological permits, serves as the point of contact for unmarked human burial discoveries, assists with regulation revisions, organizes the Annual Archaeology Fair, and serves as ex-office trustee to the boards of the Archaeological Society of New Mexico and the New Mexico Archaeological Council. This position also conducts archaeological review of federal and state undertakings and related archaeological, historical and ethnographic reports, forms and documents under federal and state laws and regulations and provides technical assistance to local, state, and federal agencies, CRM professionals, non-profit preservation, industry, and the public.
How does it get done? Review federal, state, and local projects and cultural resources reports and site records in accordance with appropriate historic preservation laws, regulations, agreement documents, and Secretary of Interior's Standards for Historic Preservation.
Work with the Director, the Archaeological Permit Coordinator, and the Cultural Properties Review Committee to revise archaeological permit rules.
Serve as the point of contact for unmarked human burial discoveries and carry out the procedures for notification and final disposition.
Review all archaeological permit and SHPO Directory applications for conformance with state standards and regulations.
Develop and implement the annual Archaeology Fair and participate in avocational archaeological societies.
Make eligibility determinations and determinations of effect for each undertaking on historic properties
Who are the customers? Cultural resource consultants, preservation professionals, local, state and federal agencies, Native American tribes, and the public.
Ideal Candidate Graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Architectural History, History, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation, or a closely related field of study;
A minimum of two years of full-time professional experience.
A minimum of 12 months of full-time professional experience working with the cultural resources of New Mexico.
A minimum of two years' experience working with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
Experience with or knowledge of state preservation laws and regulations.
Experience with or knowledge of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
Minimum Qualification Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Geography, American Studies or a similar discipline as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification and four (4) years of experience providing technical GIS support, including an understanding of New Mexico archaeology or the archaeology of the American Southwest. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results.
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Some travel within the state may be required. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
